Men's volleyball team wins third straight match

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team is starting to put things together.

The Lasers won their third match in a row, taking down El Camino, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, Friday night in a nonconference match at home.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 3-2 on the season. El Camino fell to 3-2.

The Lasers were paced by freshman middle blocker Kevin Vaz, who finished with 13 kills and five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Cole Murray had 12 kills and eight digs and freshman middle blocker Marcus Dillon ended with eight kills and five blocks for the Lasers. Freshman outside hitter AJ Hammer had eight kills, three digs and two blocks.

Freshmen John Lasezky and Steven Duhoux split the setter duties with Lasezky contributing 22 assists and nine digs and Duhoux adding 13 assists for IVC. Sophomore libero Danny Roman chipped in eight digs.

Irvine Valley rallied at the end of the first set to get going.

The Lasers won the final three points to take the first set, 25-23. Vaz ended the set with a roll shot for a kill.

El Camino won a close second set. Tied 19-19, the Warriors scored two straight points and then never gave up the lead the rest of the way.

El Camino was up early in the third set. It took a 14-11 lead after an IVC hitting error. But the Lasers tied the set at 14-14. The set was tied at 15, 16 and 18 before the Lasers went up for good.

Back-to-back kills by Murray put IVC in front, 20-18.

Then after an El Camino point, Vaz had two straight kills and Hammer added a kill to give Irvine Valley a 23-19 advantage.

Three points later, Vaz and Dillon ended the set with a combo block.

Irvine Valley pulled out a tight fourth set.

The set was tied at 20, 21 , 22 and 23 before IVC took the final two points.

Again Vaz came through for IVC. He had two straight kills to end the match.

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday, hosting LA Trade Tech at 1 p.m.

It is an early match time because of basketball games scheduled later in the day at Irvine Valley.
