Men's soccer team excited about start of the 2023 season
It is year two for Irvine Valley men's soccer head coach Conor Ward and he could not be more thrilled.

Ward has a potent lineup, including a strong back line with one of the best players in the state to build on what the 2022 squad accomplished.

Last year, the Lasers finished with a record of 11-7-5 overall, but most of those losses were against the top teams in the state.

The team that IVC starts its 2023 season against on Tuesday at home at 3 p.m. - El Camino - handed IVC two of its losses, including in the So. Cal. Regional second round (3-0) last Nov. 19.

"Myself and the coaching staff are excited with the talented group we have here," Ward said. "The group have been working hard in training since the start of summer and it's great feeling to be kicking off today. As always we start the year off with real tough tests competing against the top opposition in the state."

Leading the way for the Lasers is sophomore Lennart Granzow.

The standout defender from Germany was named first team all-Orange Empire Conference and then all-region for the Lasers last year.

Ganzow helped IVC give up just 21 goals in 22 matches on the season.

Another top returner for the Lasers is sophomore forward Grant Miller, who was named first team all-conference after leading the OEC in goals last year.

He finished with a conference-best 14 goals and added five assists for a league-high 33 points.

Irvine Valley also gets back the wizardry of sophomore Ivan Lopez. He played for the Lasers in 2021 and was named the conference's co-MVP.

Lopez, out of Godinez High, ended the 2021 campaign with eight goals and seven assists for 23 points. He was especially good on free kicks for the Lasers.

Lopez ranked second in the conference in goals, tied for second in assists and second in points on the year two years ago.

Other returners for the Lasers are sophomore defender Gabriel Velasco, sophomore midfielders Jacob Edwards, Lukas Stark, Anthony Ocampo and Ali Younis and sophomore forwards Christopher Camarena and Fred Becovic.

But Ward is enthusiastic about his whole roster of players.

"It's a chance for all players to impress here locally but most importantly they can create their own legacy in the collegiate soccer world," Ward said. "We are happy to provide the right conditions for our student athletes to thrive on and off the field.

"Our hope is to see many players move on to the four-year level this season, whilst collectively the goal is to improve game by game to meet our squad goals."

After Tuesday's game against El Camino, IVC will be on the road at the tough Hartnell Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, facing more top teams.
