Men's soccer team tops Mesa for second straight victory

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team scored the final two goals of the game, including the last tally in the 88th minute to rally and beat San Diego Mesa, 2-1, on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

It was IVC's second straight victory and improved the team's record to 2-2-2 overall.

The Lasers were coming off a 5-0 shutout win over Southwestern at home last Friday.

San Diego Mesa's record slipped to 0-4-0 overall.

Irvine Valley took an early lead, getting a goal in the fifth minute from freshman midfielder Juan Gomez off an assist from freshman midfielder Carlos Mota-Villegas.

The Lasers carried that 1-0 lead into halftime.

San Diego Mesa came back with two quick goals to start the second half, getting back-to-back finishes from Alejandro Benavidez in the 48th and 49th minutes to go ahead, 2-1.

Irvine Valley answered in the 75th minute when freshman midfielder Joshua Lummis scored to knot the score at 2-2.

And then in the 85th minute, Irvine Valley put the match away. Freshman striker Max Kleinhammes scored off an assist from freshman defender Christopher Osuna.

It was Kleinhammes' team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Sophomore keeper Nathan King made five saves in goal for IVC in the win.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to LA Harbor for a 3 p.m. contest.
