It has been tough for the Irvine Valley men's soccer team to score goals lately.
That sure wasn't the case on Friday afternoon against Cypress at home.
The Lasers scored their most goals of the season in beating the Chargers, 8-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match.
The previous high for goals in a contest this season came at Cypress on Sept. 25 when IVC came out on top, 7-0.
IVC improved its record to 5-9-3 overall and 3-6-4 in conference with the win, while Cypress fell to 1-16-0 overall and 0-11-0 in conference.
Irvine Valley had scored just one goal in its previous four matches.
But it didn't take IVC long to get going Friday.
Sophomore forward Grant Joyce scored in the second minute of action, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Mahyar Shabani and putting the ball into an open net.
Irvine Valley was at it again three minutes later. Sophomore Julian Anaya took a pass from Joyce and hammered a left-footed shot into the left side of the goal for a 2-0 Irvine Valley lead.
Cypress got a goal back in the 10th minute after the Lasers were called for a foul in the box. Lorenzo LaViolette scored on the penalty kick.
But it was all Irvine Valley after that.
In the 31st minute, IVC earned a penalty kick and sophomore defender Alexis Campos put the ball into the lower right corner from the spot.
The Lasers then went up, 4-1, a few minutes later. Joyce sent a ball across from the left side that deflected off Shabani and then found its way to freshman midfielder Gibae Kim. He sent a right-footed shot from near the top of the box that found the back of the net.
And IVC went ahead, 5-1, just before the end of the half when Shabani earned his first goal of the contest with a left-footed shot.
Irvine Valley got goals from Joyce (54th minute), sophomore forward Daniel Segal (58th) minute and Kim (90th minute) in the second half to close out the scoring.
Joyce and Kim each finished with two goals in the contest. Joyce improved his team lead in goals to nine on the year. Kim scored his first and second goals of the season and Campos put in his first.
Segal scored his sixth, which ranks second on the club.
Freshman keeper Nathan King started in goal and made two saves in the opening half. Freshman Jared Yap played the second half and had to make just one save.
Irvine Valley has next Tuesday off from conference action with a bye, but hosts Norco on Friday at 3 p.m.
