Men's soccer team wins second in a row, blanks Southwestern

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team won its second straight match and posted its second shutout in a row with a 2-0 nonconference win at Southwestern on Wednesday afternoon.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 2-3-0 on the year.

The Lasers controlled play for most of the game and had a number of chances early.

But the contest was still scoreless at halftime.

Irvine Valley got on the board four minutes into the second half.

After a foul, freshman Fred Becovic sent a free kick into the box. Sophomore midfielder Daniel Segal made a run and was able to head the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Irvine Valley put the game away in the 65th minute on a free kick goal by sophomore defender Sergio Montes from nearly 40 yards out.

The IVC defense, which included Montes, Becovic and freshmen Brayden Jenkins, Jared Ellis along with freshman goalie Nathan King were solid.

King had to make just three saves on the day.

Irvine Valley starts Orange Empire Conference play next Tuesday, traveling to Fullerton for a 3 p.m. match.

Fullerton, which is undefeated so far at 4-0, was ranked No. 1 in the state in the California Community College Sports Information Association Poll this week.
