Men's basketball team wins one of three games in Monterey

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team won one of three games in the Monterey Peninsula Tournament over the weekend.

The Lasers opened with a win and then dropped two straight, including a close one in the third-place game.

Irvine Valley's record dropped to 3-6 on the year.

IVC started with a 74-58 victory over Hartnell on Thursday. Sophomore guard Isaiah Mahmud led the way with 15 points. Sophomore guard Geoff Salas added 14 points and freshman forward Sadiq Muhammad had nine points in the win for IVC.

Irvine Valley moved on to the semifinals on Friday, but fell to Gavilan, 64-54.

Louis had a big game for the Lasers with 21 points, but he was the only player in double figures for IVC.

Salas contributed eight points and Mahmud, freshman guard Tylan Lassiter and freshman forward Garrett Barth each had five points.

Irvine Valley finished up the event with a hard-luck, 56-54, defeat to Solano on Saturday in the third-place game.

Gavilan out-scored IVC, 30-20, in the second half and hit a key shot in the final minute for the win.

Irvine Valley was paced by freshman guard Kevin Olsen, wo finished with 18 points. Mahmud added 11 points and Muhammad ended with 10 points.

The Lasers are back in action on Wednesday at the Don Johnson Classic at Cypress. The tournament has games on Wednesday and Friday.

IVC opens against Santa Monica at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
