Baseball team makes it four in a row with comeback victory

Make it four wins in a row for the Irvine Valley baseball team.

And what a wild, crazy win it was on Tuesday night for the Lasers over Santa Ana in a Orange Empire Conference game at the OC Great Park Stadium.

The Lasers came from behind with some big run-scoring innings and clutch at bats and then held on to beat the Dons, 12-11.

The 4 hour and eight minute game, featured the 23 runs to go along with 26 combined hits, 14 combined walks, several passed balls and wild pitched that kept innings alive along with 100 combined batters from both teams going to the plate.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 7-9-1 overall and 6-7 in conference. Santa Ana went to 9-8 overall and 7-3 in conference.

Where to start or end with this game?

The Lasers were down, 6-0, after the top of the fourth inning.

But IVC responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to get back in it. Freshman catcher Gabe Briones had an RBI single, freshman center fielder Bradley Wilkison bunted for a single and RBI and then freshman second baseman Eric Burckle hit a RBI double.

The Lasers, backed by freshman left-handed reliever Seth Bougher, shut down Santa Ana over the next three innings, and Irvine Valley put up five runs, including four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take its first lead.

Through seven innings, Irvine Valley led, 8-6.

And the Lasers tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to go ahead, 12-7.

In the bottom of the eighth, Briones had an RBI single, freshman designated hitter Jack Haggerty hit a two-run double, and Burckle had another RBI hit.

The Lasers needed all of those 12 runs as Santa Ana scored four runs and had the tying and winning runs on base with two outs in the top of the ninth.

But freshman right-handed reliever Cruz Barrios was able to leave those runners stranded. He struck out James Williams to end the game.

Barrios pitched around some trouble and struck out the side in the top of the ninth.

Irvine Valley had several stars on the night.

Burckle went 2 for 5 with a walk and four RBI.

Haggerty was 2 for 3 with two walks and two RBI.

Briones went 3 for 5 with three runs scored and two RBI and Wilkison was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Bougher earned the win on the mound for the Lasers. He pitched 3.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

And Barrios picked up his second save. He pitched one inning and allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

Nick Lopez was a force in the game for Santa Ana. He went 5 for 6 at the plate with three RBI. Marcus Johnson had three hits and Griffin Selby and Micah Pietila-Wiggs each added two hits and one RBI for the Dons.
