Irvine Valley's women's beach volleyball team split a pair of matches at home on Friday.
The Lasers won their most important one, however.
Irvine Valley edged Orange Coast, 3-2, in an Orange Empire Conference opener for the squad.
Three of the matches ended up going to three sets.
Irvine Valley received wins in straight sets from its No. 1 team of sophomores Lea Kruse and Gabriela Griego (21-9, 21-14) and its No. 3 team of sophomores Anna Unke and Alaina Gendale (21-16, 21-8).
And the Lasers clinched the match with a three-set victory from the No. 5 team of sophomores Truth Hafey and Alma Entesari.
Hafey and Entesari had to battle back from being a set down. They cruised in the second set and were up big in the third set before having to fight to the finish to get the win.
The final set was tied, 13-13, before Entesari served an ace to set up match point. Orange Coast couldn't get the ball back on another Entesari serve to end things.
The IVC duo came through with a 19-21, 21-16, 15-13 win.
Orange Coast took the final two matches in three sets that were out on the courts.
Irvine Valley finished up its day with a 4-1 loss to Concordia. Concordia also defeated the Lasers, 3-2, last week.
The Lasers No.3 team of sophomores Kendall Nolan and Alaina Thomas picked up the lone win, 19-21, 22-20, 15-10.
But Irvine Valley's top team of Kruse and Griego also gave Concordia's No. 1 duo of Vanessa Beryzay and Ellie Cary all it could handle before falling, 16-21, 21-19, 15-13.
Irvine Valley plays again in a wild day next Tuesday. The Lasers travel to Long Beach State to take on NCAA Division 1 Utah at 12 p.m. before playing host LBSU at 2 p.m.
IVC will then return home and take on Wayne State at 5 p.m.
