Sophomore Kendall Nolan, a two-year starter and a key member of the Irvine Valley women's beach volleyball team that finished third at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship in 2019, has signed with the NCAA Division I Universty of Portland.
Last spring, Nolan helped lead IVC to an unblemished Orange Empire Conference record and a No. 3 state ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) final poll. The Laser beach squad was named the team of the year as part of the IVC athletic department's 19th Annual Awards.
Irvine Valley ended with a record of 17-8 overall and won a conference title with a mark of 10-0. IVC ended up going 15-1 against community college opponents in 2019.
Nolan and teammate Alaina Gendale finished ninth at the conference pairs championship and qualified for the Southern California Pairs Regional event. In the regionals, Nolan and Gendale took 16th, which was good enough to make the California Community College Athletic Association State Pairs Championship. IVC had all four of its pairs qualify for the state championship.
Nolan and the IVC beach team were ranked No. 2 in the AVCA preseason poll this year and it looked like the Lasers would have another great shot at making a state run before the season was halted.
Nolan, who attended Santa Margarita High, was teammed with fellow sophomore Alaina Thomas this season. The duo was playing primarily at the No. 2 or 3 position out of the five teams in the IVC lineup.
Portland competes in the West Coast Conference.
