Irvine Valley's athletes of the year for the 2023-24 school year are sophomore women's basketball player Makena Tomlinson and freshman men's tennis player Nick Grove.
Tomlinson was named second team all-state by the coaches association.
Tomlinson, a sophomore post player, averaged 12.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game and shot 51.6 percent from the field on the season.
She helped the Lasers finish with a record of 21-8 overall.
Irvine Valley also finished second in the Orange Empire Conference with a record of 12-2 and made the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs.
Tomlinson, out of Corona del Mar High, scored in double figures in 22 games for the Lasers, including scoring more than 20 points in three contests.
She had a season-high 30 points in IVC's 70-57 win over Fullerton on the road on Jan. 19.
Tomlinson also had at least 10 rebounds in 17 of IVC's contests with a season-best 16 in Irvine Valley's 65-46 conference win over Fullerton at home on Feb. 13.
Grove, who helped the IVC men's tennis team earn a Orange Empire Conference title, reach the semifinals of the So. Cal. Playoffs and finish third in the state at the end of the year, took home a 3C2A doubles state title with teammate Luciano Pardo.
As a team, Irvine Valley was ranked No. 3 in the state - behind only Ventura and Glendale.
IVC ended with a record of 11-2 overall and went 8-0 in the Orange Empire Conference to win the title.
Grove ended up being ranked fourtrh in the state in singles
And in doubles, Grove and Pardo were ranked No. 1 after capturing the state title.
The duo defeated Glendale's Adam Ridaoui and Lance Morgan of Glendale, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, in the final at Libbey Park in late April.
The entertaining match was played with short rallies consisting of no more than four shots, with power being the decisive factor.
Scholar athletes of the year, team of the year and coach of the year among others will be announced over the next two weeks.
