Contributions all around in basketball team's win at Ventura

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team had its first game in the Ventura/Oxnard Classic on Wednesday called off because of court conditions at Oxnard.

That didn't stop the Lasers from earning a big win on Thursday in its second game of the event.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 9 in the state, and fourth in Southern California in the latest coaches' poll, defeated Ventura, 90-51, at Ventura.

IVC scored the first 17 points of the game and rolled from there. Irvine Valley led, 19-3, at the end of the first quarter and was ahead, 57-25, at the half.

For the game, the Lasers shot 57.4 percent (35 of 61) from the field and went 15 of 30 from three-point range.

IVC improved its record to 10-2 overall. Ventura went to 3-7 overall.

The Lasers received contributions from all over. Five different players scored in double figures, led by sophomore standout guard Jessica Suruor, who had 23 points. She made 8 of 11 shots, including 7 of 10 from three-point range.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds and sophomore guard Morgan Higgins addd 14 points, seven assists and four steals for IVC.

Sophomore Paola Roa added 11 points and 6 rebouns and freshman post player Giselle Martinez contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Irvine Valley dominated the boards, out-rebounding Ventura, 46-22.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday to start Orange Empire Conference action. The Lasers are scheduled to play at Cypress at 7 p.m.
