Women's basketball team wins again, downs LA Trade Tech

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team cruised to its second straight victory to open the 2021-22 season.

The Lasers defeated LA Trade Tech, 77-44, at home on Wednesday afternoon.

IVC led from start to finish. The Lasers have out-scored their two opponents, 206-62, so far.

Irvine Valley started its campaign with a 129-18 win over Taft last Friday.

On Wednesday, the Lasers got a big performance from sophomore guard Jessica Suruor. She finished with 25 points, shooting 8 of 13 from the field, 5 of 9 from three-point range and 4 of 4 from the free throw line.

Sophomore guard Morgan Higgins added 15 points, four rebounds, six assists and five steals.

And freshman forward Sarah Matossian was the third IVC player in double figures scoring with 10 points. She also chipped in nine rebounds.

But the Lasers, for the second straight game, received contributions from the whole squad.

Freshman Aliya Richmond had nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench, freshman guard Paola Roa had six points and seven assists and sophomore guard Katie Nguyen contributed four points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Irvine Valley led, 32-15, at the half and out-scored Trade Tech, 45-29, in the second half.

IVC improved its record to 2-0 on the year, while Trade Tech fell to 2-3.

The Beavers were led by Ja-Naiah Perkins Jackson and Janae Turner with 14 points each. Jackson also had four rebounds, six assists and six steals. Turner made three three-pointers.

The Lasers play again on Friday at Citrus at 5 p.m.
