Women's basketball team rolls to easy win over Rio Hondo

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season last Friday night - a one-point loss at Citrus in a game that the Lasers had every chance to win.

IVC made sure it wasn't close on Wednesday night at home.

The Lasers came out ready and defeated Rio Hondo, 87-41, to improve their record to 3-1 on the year.

Irvine Valley led by as many as 51 points in the contest.

All 12 players that suited up scored and the Lasers had 26 assists on their 36 baskets.

After struggling to score last Friday, IVC shot 47.4 percent (36 of 76) from the field and out-rebounded Rio Hondo, 56-29, with 52 points in the paint.

Irvine Valley was up 29-15 after the first quarter and then used a 24-9 run in the second quarter to take complete control of the game.

IVC led, 53-24, at the half.

The Lasers were led by freshman forward Sarah Matossian, who finished with 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore guard Paola Rao had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists, sophomore guard Jessica Suruor finished with 12 points and sophomore guard Morgan Higgins had another solid, all-around game with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and six steals.

IVC's bench added 23 points, led by five points each from freshmen guards Kennedy Pucci and Rachel Gafford.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to El Camino for a 7 p.m. game.
