Women's basketball team set to host crossover event

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team will host its Crossover event Friday and Saturday at IVC.

Cerritos plays Rio Hondo on Friday at 5 p.m. with Irvine Valley taking on Mt. San Jacinto at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Rio Hondo and Mt. San Jacinto play at 4 p.m. with Irvine Valley hosting Cerritos at 6 p.m.

Fans are welcome with social distancing at Irvine Valley, but masks are required in Hart Gymnasium.

Irvine Valley has a record of 5-1 overall. 

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team used a torrid third quarter to pull away and beat LA Valley, 72-48, in its last game on Nov. 23.

IVC trailed, 15-13, at the end of the first quarter. The Lasers played better in the second quarter and took a 36-32 lead at the break.

It was the third quarter that made the difference. IVC out-scored LA Valley, 22-6, in the quarter to build a 58-38 advantage.

In the third period, Irvine Valley made 11 of 16 shots. Sophomore guard Jessica Suruor did much of the damage. She went 7 of 9 from the floor and finished with 14 points in the quarter.

Irvine Valley cruised the rest of the way and won by 24 points.

Surruor had a game-high 21 points to lead the Lasers.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian added 19 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and five steals for IVC.

Sophomore guard Paola Roa ended with eight points and five assists and sophomore guard Morgan Higgins contributed eight points, four assists and four steals.

IVC shot 48.4 percent (30 of 62) as a team in the contest. The Lasers also had 19 assists.

The Lasers will take on a tough Mt. San Jacinto team in the opener. Mt. San Jacinto has a record of 4-3 overall.

The Eagles defeated Fullerton, 66-45, in its last game on Nov. 23 at home.

Alexis Pena led with a game-high 16 points. She also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Sandee Heiermann added 14 points for MSJC in the win and had three steals as the Eagles forced 19 turnovers on the night.

Deja Blue just missed her own double-double as she finished with nine points, nine rebounds, and also dished out a game high six assists. Rayven Crook and Shyann Morreo had seven points each for the Eagles, as nine MSJC players found the scoring column.

Cerritos has won three straight games and has a record of 6-2 overall.

The Falcons last played on Nov. 23 and beat MiraCosta, 71-44, in their home opener.

Ilani Avila led the team with 15 points and added five rebounds, with Brianna Flores finishing with 11 points, five assists and three steals.

Off the bench, Ashley Miller (seven points, four rebounds) and Cynthia Estrada (seven points, eight rebounds) joined Dominique Harrison in making key contributions.

Rio Hondo has a record of 3-6 overall.

Rio Hondo last played in Nov. 19 at home against Citrus at El Camino and fell in a close game, 56-53.

Jennyfer Morales scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the late-game Rio Hondo charge.

Rio Hondo got within 55-51 with 2:25 to play after a Morales jumper but would not score again until a basket by Atahisia Rojas at the buzzer.

Rojas came off the bench to chip in with 10 points and five rebounds while Rosalie Avalos totaled seven rebounds and four points. Morales added 11 rebounds and six steals on the night.
