Women's basketball team holds off Eagles in IVC Crossover

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team earned its best win of the season so far with a hard-fought 75-63 victory over Mt. San Jacinto on Friday night at home.

The game was part of the IVC Crossover event. Rio Hondo rallied to beat Cerritos, 67-62, in the first game of the day.

On Saturday, Mt. San Jacinto will play Rio Hondo at 4 p.m. and Irvine Valley hosts Cerritos at 6 p.m.

In an intense and sometimes chippy contest, Irvine Valley led most of the way to defeat Mt. San Jacinto. The Lasers held an advantage at the end of each quarter, including, 32-24, at the half.

Two technical fouls were called on each team.

But Irvine Valley held tough, despite missing several players due to health and safety protocols.

Four players scored in double figures and the Lasers received contributions from the eight players that suited up.

Sophomore guard Jessica Suruor led Irvine Valley for the second straight game in points. She finished with 21 points Friday night, making 5 of 10 three-pointers.

Sophomore guard Katie Nguyen had her best game of the season, ending with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals and sophomore guard Morgan Higgins added 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. 

IVC's fourth player in double figures was freshman guard Kaila Truby, who had a solid all-around game with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists.

Freshman post player Paea Tafea contributed four points and six rebounds and freshman post Giselle Martinez had four points, four rebounds and two blocks.

The Lasers shot 50 percent (30 of 60) from the field in the game and went 10 of 24 (41.7 percent) from three-point range.

Mt. San Jacinto was paced by Sandee Heiermann, who finished with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals and Shyann Morreo, who had 15 points and five rebounds. Diamonere Butler added 10 rebounds for the Eagles.
