Women's volleyball team earns hard-fought win at Santa Barbara

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team held on for a five-set win in a down to the wire contest at Santa Barbara City Friday night.

The Lasers won the first two sets, survived a Santa Barbara comeback attempt and rallied a bit themselves in the final points of the match to improve their record to 2-0 on the season.

Irvine Valley came out on top with a 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 17-15 victory in Santa Barbara City's home opener.

IVC handed Santa Barbara City just its fifth loss at home in the last 42 matches.

Santa Barbara City's record slipped to 1-2 on the season.

Irvine Valley actually trailed, 10-5, in the fifth and final set, but then proceeded to go on a 6-0 run. Freshman outside hitter Shaelyn Perez sparked the rally and Irvine Valley took its first lead of the final set at 11-10.

IVC never trailed after that.

The Lasers had three set points, but Santa Barbara City tied the set at 14-14.

IVC pulled out the win however when Annie Mitchem, the Lasers' 6-2 freshman middle blocker, finished off the match with a block on the right side.

The match lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

Mitchem led the way for IVC with 17 kills and five blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Marissa Doran added 13 kills, nine digs and two aces. Freshman outside hitter Kobi Pekich had 11 kills and two aces and Perez contributed 10 kills.

Sophomore libero Becky Moodie finished with 18 digs and freshman setter Hailey Jones ran the offense with 55 assists. Jones also chipped in 15 digs and two aces.

Irvine Valley plays again this Wednesday when it hosts Rio Hondo in a non-conference match at 5 p.m.
