Women's soccer team blanks San Diego City in home opener

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 nonconference win over San Diego City on Wednesday afternoon.

The three goals were the first three of the season for the Lasers. They tied, 0-0, at Palomar last Thursday in their 2014 season-opening match.

Leading the charge was sophomore midfielder Kristen Ostler, who had a goal and an assist in the win over San Diego City.

It didn't take long for IVC to get on the board on Wednesday in its first game at home.

The Lasers attacked from the outset and found the back of the net just a minute and 43 seconds into the contest.

Freshman forward Rosa Soto Aleman crossed a ball from left to right to Ostler.

Ostler settled and then pushed the ball back into the box to sophomore midfielder Courtney Smith, who blasted a one-time shot past San Diego City keeper Charlotte Guerrero for a 1-0 lead.

Guerrero saved several other fine Irvine Valley attempts for most of the rest of the half. IVC sophomore forward Tiana Salazar sent a high shot that Guerrero was able to tip over the top. Guerror also knocked a shot by Soto-Aleman over the top of the goal.

Salazar, Ostler, Soto-Aleman and freshman midfielders Chelsea Gatdula and Christina Anderson each created other opportunities to score for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers finally broke through with their second goal in the 31st minute on a score by Ostler.

Freshman midfielder Marissa Rico sent a cross in to Ostler. She then faked a defender and hit a tough-angle shot that beat the keeper to the far post.

San Diego City's best chance to score came midway through the first half. Karla Garcia got in behind the IVC defense. But Laser freshman goalie Nicole Dunn was able to save Garcia's shot to the near post.

It was Dunn's lone save on the afternoon.

Irvine Valley led, 2-0, at halftime after out-shooting San Diego City, 13-1.

The Lasers scored their final goal of the match in the 64th minute when Soto Aleman took a long pass from sophomore defender Celina Chang and then pushed a left-footed shot past Guerrero.

Irvine Valley out-shot San Diego City, 20-1, for the contest.

The defense was led by sophomores Emely Portillo and Chang and freshmen Marissa Perez and Evelyn Lucatero.

The Lasers play again on Friday, hosting LA Harbor at 3 p.m.
