Women's basketball team takes seventh straight to open season

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team is off to one of its best-ever starts.

The Lasers improved their record to 7-0 overall with a 58-51 win at Rio Hondo on Tuesday night.

Irvine Valley, under first-year head coach Jason Garey, play again next Tuesday at home against Palo Verde at 7 p.m.

IVC fell behind, 12-10, after the first quarter at Rio Hondo, but out-scored the Roadrunners, 39-24, over the second and third quarters to take control.

The Lasers carried a 49-38 lead into the final period.

Freshman guard Emily Freeman led the Lasers with 14 points. She went 5 of 11 from the field, including 4 of 10 from three-point range.

Sophomore forward Giselle Martinez was a perfect 5 of 5 from the field and had 11 points. She added four rebounds.

Freshman guard Trasara Alexander contributed nine points, a team-high 16 rebounds, three assists and four steals and sophomore guard Kennedy Pucci had eight points, five rebounds and five assists for the Lasers.
