Men's volleyball team starts OEC play with win in five sets

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team has played six five-set matches so far this season out of its 13 competitions.

The Lasers pulled out their second win and it was an important one.

Irvine Valley won the final two sets and came back to defeat Fullerton, 23-25, 25-21, 27-29, 25-21, 15-7, at Fullerton in the first Orange Empire Conference contest of the season on Wednesday night.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 9 in the state, improved its record to 6-7 overall.

The Lasers had lost five-set matches to Miramar (twice), Santa Barbara City and Grossmont and had topped Moorpark before beating Fullerton.

Irvine Valley hit .344 as a team on the night. The Lasers were led by sophomore opposite Demetre Gossett with 26 kills. He leads the state in total kills. Gossett added nine digs and three aces.

Freshman outside hitter Colin Chilingworth had 15 kills and hit .500, freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Josh Beymer and freshman opposite Garret Schnitker each had seven kills, sophomore libero Red Ramos finished with seven digs and sophomore setter Jimi Wilson ended with 53 assists.
