Men's volleyball team remains at No. 8 in the state coaches poll

Irvine Valley captured its biggest win of the season last week, defeating previously unbeaten Moorpark on the road in five sets.

But the Lasers remained at No. 8  for the second straight week in this week's California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches Association State Poll.

The Lasers have won two straight entering this week's action and have improved their record to 4-5 overall.

IVC hosts San Diego Mesa on Tuesday night.

Long Beach City was at the top of the poll for the second week in a row.

The Vikings, who have won four in a row (dropping just two sets over the streak) captured their lone match last week, sweeping San Diego Mesa at home, 25-19, 25-14, 25-10, to improve to 6-1 overall. In the win over Mesa, eight different Viking players recorded at least one kill – led by Arsene Ponsin's 10 kills. Long Beach City hit .366 as a team. LBCC has a big match Wednesday, opening Western State Conference play at new No. 2 El Camino.

El Camino has a record of 5-1 heading into this week's WSC showdown with Long Beach and has won four in a row, including sweeping Orange Coast, 32-30, 25-18, 25-16, at home last Wednesday. The Warriors hit .349 as a team in the match and were paced by 11 kills from Gabriel Vargas-Featherstone and 21 assists from Tommy Fraker.

Orange Coast slipped from No. 2 to No. 3 after the loss to El Camino. The Pirates have dropped four in a row. Orange Coast had 31 hitting errors to 38 kills in the defeat at El Camino. OCC tries to get back on track when it hosts a pair of Pacific Coast Athletic Conference squads this week – Grossmont Wednesday and San Diego Mesa on Friday.

Santa Barbara City moved up a spot in the poll to fourth. The Vaqueros improved to 3-2 overall with a five-set, comeback win at Fullerton last Wednesday. Santa Barbara City dropped the first two sets, but rallied to take the last three, including the fifth, 15-10.

The Vaqueros got big performances from Calvin Sanborn (22 kills), Trent Lingruen (21 kills), Luke Hetherington (14 kills) and Kyle Merchen (51 assists).

Miramar also moved up a spot and rounds out the top five teams in the poll. The Jets beat Golden West, 25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 28-26, at home last Friday. It was Miramar's third win in a row.

Miramar plays at No. 6 Santiago Canyon on Wednesday.

Moorpark slipped three spots to No. 7 after losing its first match of the season last Wednesday at home to No. 8 Irvine Valley in five sets. IVC, Golden West and Fullerton stayed at the eighth through 10th spots in the poll for the second straight week.
