Irvine Valley's men's soccer team came away with its second straight Orange Empire Conference victory and one of the biggest wins of the season to date.
Probably the most dramatic win of the season as well.
Freshman goalie Braden Peters saved a penalty kick on the final play of the match to preserve Irvine Valley's 1-0 triumph over Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference match at home on Tuesday.
The win lifted Irvine Valley's record to 5-4-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference. IVC moved into a tie for first place with Santa Ana in the OEC standings.
Golden West's record fell to 6-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference.
Minutes into extra time in the second half, Golden West's Jesus Vargas was taken down in the box. The referee awarded a penalty kick and Rustler keeper Luis Sosa stepped up to take it.
Sosa hammered a line-drive shot to the left side, but Peters made the right guess, diving to make the save.
The game was called soon after.
Irvine Valley scored the lone goal of the match in the match in the 39th minute. Sophomore forward Toby Waterman took the ball down the right side where he beat one Golden West defender and then cut in and went around another defender. Waterman sent the ball across the goal mouth. Sophomore forward Kendrick Nguyen slid and knocked it into the back of the net.
That was all Irvine Valley needed in what was a back and forth contest between the two teams that have battled for the conference title over the past three seasons.
Peters ended up making six saves in goal and Sosa made four saves for Golden West.
The Lasers play again on Friday at Norco in a conference match at 3 p.m.
