Three second-half goals lift men's soccer team to victory

The Irvine Valley men's soccer coach Martin McGrogan knew his team had some offensive firepower this season.

The Lasers sure showed it over a six-minute span in the second half.

IVC scored all three of its goals during that time in a 3-1 win over Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference game at IVC.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 4-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference, while Cypress slipped to 5-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in conference.

Freshman forward Eder Olivas continued to shine for IVC.

Olivas, who had both goals in Irvine Valley's tie at Santa Ana on Tuesday, ended up with a goal and two assists in the win on Friday.

Olivas had the best chance of the first half, hitting the crossbar with a free kick in the 33rd minute.

But the match went into halftime scoreless with each team only taking three shots.

Cypress opened the scoring with a nice goal 13 minutes into the second half. Arturo Olivo found the back of the net on a header off a well-placed free kick into the box by Bryan Aguirre.

But IVC answered back in the 68th minute.

Olivas hit a free kick from nearly 40 yards out on the left side that bounced in the goal box and found its way past Cypress Eric Rodriguez far post.

That was just the start of the scoring for IVC, which didn't waste any time to take the lead for good.

Just two minutes later, Olivas sent another free kick into the box. Juan Sebastian Oliveras was in the right spot and finished to give Irvine Valley a 2-1 lead.

Then in the 72nd minute, Olivas was at it again. His free kick was on target. Rodriguez was able to deflect it, but Irvine Valley freshman forward Joseph DiCarlo was there for the rebound. He headed it in to put Irvine Valley ahead, 3-1.

Irvine Valley continued to pressure behind Oliveras and sophomore forward Toby Waterman, but the Lasers couldn't find another goal.

The goal was Olivas' sixth of the season and third in the last two matches. Oliveras scored his third goal and third in the last three contests. DiCarlo netted his second goal of the season.

Irvine Valley freshman goalie Braden Peters had to make just two saves in the match.

IVC plays again on Tuesday at home against Golden West at 3 p.m.
