Irvine Valley continued its tough pre-Orange Empire Conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lasers ran into a solid Rio Hondo side and fell, 2-0, at home.

Irvine Valley faced Hartnell, the No. 1 team in the state, last Friday and then the No. 2 squad in the state, Rio Hondo, on Tuesday. IVC also competed in the Hartnell Tournament three weeks ago.

The loss to Rio Hondo was Irvine Valley's second straight and dropped the team's record to 3-2-2 overall.

IVC will begin Orange Empire Conference play next Tuesday at Norco.

Rio Hondo improved its record to 8-0-2 overall. The Roadrunners have wins over Cerritos, Fullerton, Santa Ana and now Irvine Valley.

The Roadrunners scored the lone goal of the first half in the 34th minute. Luis Bonola slipped Moses Gutierrez a pass in the box and Gutierrez was able to slide the ball past IVC freshman keeper Hagen Truniger.

One of Irvine Valley's best chances came early in the second half. Just two minutes in, freshman forward Connor Elder nailed a bending free kick that Rio Hondo goalie Edwin Elizarraraz saved.

Rio Hondo nearly scored in the 53rd minute, but a shot by Sergio Becerra was saved off the line by IVC freshman defender Ethan Thrall.

Elizarraraz was forced to make another save on a second free kick by Elder in the 56th minute.

Freshman forward Joseph Ferguson came on and created a couple of opportunities for IVC midway through the second half. But Irvine Valley couldn't find an equalizing goal.

And Rio Hondo put the match out of reach in the 80th minute when Victor Joya scored off a pass from Nicholas Knapp. Knapp worked the ball down the left side and then found Joya free in the middle.

Truniger ended up making seven saves in the contest for Irvine Valley.
