Men's soccer team shuts out Cypress, 4-0, at home

It was just a matter of time for the Irvine Valley men's soccer team in its match on Friday against Cypress at home.

The Lasers, who dominated the first half, but couldn't score, put up four goals in the second half and came away with an impressive 4-0 win over the Chargers in an Orange Empire Conference match.

The four goals tied IVC's season-high for goals in a match this season. It beat Norco, 4-1, earlier in conference.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 4-8-3 overall and 3-5-0 in conference and moved the Lasers ahead of Cypress in the conference standings into sixth place. Cypress dropped to 7-5-3 overall and 2-5-1 in conference.

Irvine Valley out-shot Cypress, 8-3, in the first half and had several good chances to score, including ones by sophomore midfielder Adriel Trejo, freshman midfielder Ezequiel Villegas and freshman forward Alexis Plata.

In the second half, the Lasers kept the pressure on the Chargers and then finished their opportunities.

Plata had a shot saved by Cypress goalie Braydon Welch and then he hit another shot wide in the 56th minute.

In the 67th minute, IVC got on the board.

Villegas sent a cross in from the right side that was knocked out to freshman midfielder Takeo Bradley. Bradley volleyed his shot from 15 yards out just inside the right post to put the Lasers in the lead.

After another near goal for Plata in the 73rd minute, he found the back of the net in the 81st minute.

Plata took a pass from Villegas and niftily flipped a shot in from the right side near post to put IVC ahead, 2-0.

Irvine Valley padded its lead in the final few minutes.

Trejo sent a low shot from outside the box toward the right corner. Welch made a diving save and knocked the ball away, but it went right to IVC freshman forward Sean Goode, who tapped it in.

The team's fourth and final goal came with a minute left. Trejo made a nice run down the right side and crossed to sophomore Riccardo Antonelli, who one-timed it in.

Welch ended up making eight saves in goal for Cypress, while IVC freshman keeper Elias Licea made three saves.

Irvine Valley out-shot Cypress, 20-6, in the contest.

Goode's goal was his team-leading seventh of the season. Plata recorded his fifth goal and Villegas two assists gave him a team-high five.

Irvine Valley has two matches on the road next week. It plays at Norco on Tuesday and then at Fullerton Friday.
