Men's soccer team can't get going against Fullerton

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team couldn't make it two wins in a row in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Lasers ran into a spirited Fullerton side and fell, 4-1, at home on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss dropped Irvine Valley's record to 2-5-3 overall and 1-2-0 in conference, while Fullerton improved to 3-4-3 overall and 1-2-0 in conference.

Irvine Valley played one of its best matches of the season last Friday in beating Norco, 3-0, at home.

But IVC couldn't get much going against Fullerton on Tuesday.

"We just made too many individual mistakes today," IVC coach Martin McGrogan said. "And Fullerton played well. They deserved it."

Fullerton got on the board first. William Rodriguez scored on a long, looping shot from 45 yards out that sailed over IVC freshman goalie Elias Licea.

Fullerton led, 1-0, at the half.

The Hornets made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half after a hand ball was called in the IVC box. Brian Jaquez converted the penalty kick.

Irvine Valley regained some momentum and got a goal back in the 67th minute. Sophomore defender Riccardo Antonelli, who had pushed up the field, scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Fayiz Darwish.

But Fullerton closed out the game with two more goals – both by Jaquez. He scored in the 67th and then 90th minutes to give the Hornets the three-goal victory.

Licea ended up making two saves in goal for IVC, which will play again on Friday at Orange Coast. It is the first of two straight road matches for the Lasers. They are also at conference-leading Santiago Canyon next Tuesday. Both contests are set for 3 p.m.
