25th Annual Irvine Valley Classic gets going on Thursday

The 25th Annual San Juan Hills Toyota Classic men's basketball tournament starts Thursday at Irvine Valley College.

It features some of the top teams from around Southern California.

There will be two games played on both Thursday and Friday in the event.

Irvine Valley, which has a record of 2-0 so far, opens the classic on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Canyons.

The other game on Thursday is Ventura against Cerritos at 5 p.m.

The winners of Thursday's games will meet at 6 p.m. on Friday in the title round. A consolation game will be played at 4 p.m. Friday.

Here is a quick look at the teams in the event

Cerritos comes in with a record of 0-1.

The Falcons lost their opener at Santiago Canyon, 88-64, last week.

Jacob Washington led the team with 18 points, along with a team-high six rebounds and Joshua Belvin accounted for 11 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench.

Cerroy Chenault added 10 points with freshman Jahlen Jack posting seven points.

Cerritos was ranked No. 16 in the state in the 2019 California Community Colleges Men's Basketball Coaches Association Preseason Poll.

Ventura heads into the IVC Classic with a record of 3-1.

Ventura lost its opener to Palomar, 76-73, but turned around and beat Antelope Valley, 106-94, in overtime and then went on the road last week and won at Riverside, 83-80.

Timothy Turner led the way with 32 points for the Pirates. The win was the 150th for coach Joey Ramirez.

Shulton Tobin added 14 points and Dayveon Bates totaled nine points with 14 rebounds in the victory.

On the year, Turner is averaging 17.0 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, Bates is averaging 15.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals a game and Henry averages 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Ventura was ranked No. 19 in the state in the preseason poll.

Canyons has a record of 2-1 overall. The Cougars won their first two games of the year, beating Cuyamaca, 66-62, and then Oxnard, 104-74, in its own Clash at Canyons.

Canyons lost, 79-76, last Saturday at Cypress in a back and forth game.

Jordan Nash is averaging 18.7 points and 4.3 assists per game to lead Canyons.

Zach Phipps averages 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, Jah-Kez Moore averages 12.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and Christopher Bradford is averaging 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Irvine Valley defeated Southwestern, 74-71, and Cuyamaca, 69-50, last week to open its year.

In the win over Cuyamaca, sophomore forward Austin Carter paced the squad with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore wing Christian Louis added 11 points and Hutchison chipped in seven points, 10 rebounds and two assists in the win.

Freshman guard Devin Owens contributed 10 points and three blocks, freshman forward Jesse Stines had seven points, sophomore forward Bryce Roczey finished with six points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Ricky Robinson had a team-best six assists for the Lasers.

On the year, Carter is averaging 13.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, Owens averages 11.0 points and 2.5 assists, Louis is averaging 9.5 points, Roczey is averaging 8.0 points and 3.0 rebounds and Robinson averages 4.0 assists per game.
