Irvine Valley's women's sand volleyball team captured the title at the Intercollegiate Sand Volleyball Conference State Championship last Friday at Irvine Valley.
It was the second year of the event and featured the top four teams in Southern California that are playing sand volleyball on the community college level.
"The overall quality of play of volleyball from last year to this year was absolutely better," IVC Coach Tom Pestolesi said. "This sport is growing so fast and it is only going to get bigger. We are already seeing the community college indoor athletes getting scholarships to compete in sand volleyball at four-year schools."
IVC defeated Golden West, Fullerton and San Diego City last Friday in the ISVC tournament.
The Lasers won 14 of the 15 matches they played.
They defeated both Fullerton and San Diego City, 5-0, and beat Golden West, 4-1.
Golden West had won the title at the inaugural event last year.
Irvine Valley's teams of Becky Moodie and Lainey Hicks, Alex Goodman and Avae Masaniai, Katherine Kolodziej and Lauren Bender and Emily Dailey and Haley Whyte each won all three matches they played.
The team of Allison Cook and Annie Mitchem won two of three matches, losing a close final contest to Golden West's No. 1 team.
"Our team of the day was definitely sophomores Avai (Masaniai) and Alex (Goodman)," Pestolesi said. "They are always so focused and they are such good kids. They just do everything right."
