In leading up to the official start of the 2022-23 athletics campaign at Irvine Valley, which starts on Aug. 26 with the IVC women's soccer team playing at Southwestern at 5 p.m. and the Laser women's volleyball team hosting Canyons at 5 p.m., the Irvine Valley athletic department will count down the top 10 sports stories from the 2021-22 school year.
The No. 7 story on the list for 2021-22 is about the Irvine Valley women's badminton team finishing second at the state championships. The Lasers had a record of 8-4 overall and lost to top-ranked De Anza, 11-0, in the CCCAA state final at Fresno City.
The Irvine Valley women's badminton team had a great season. The team, that was hosted into the South Coast Conference, won the conerence and moved on to the California Commuity College Athletic Association State Championship.
The squad lost to top-ranked De Anza, 11-0, in Fresno in May of 2022.
Irvine Valley finished with a record of 8-4 overall.
Freshman Irvine Valley players Yan Luo and Chih Cheih "Juarita" Huang were each named California Community College Coaches Association 2022 All-Americans.
Luo and Huang reached the semifinals of the CCCAA doubles championship match in Fresno.
The duo fell to the eventual state-winning pair of Madison Moe and Malaya Paras-Mangrobang of De Anza, 21-12, 21-15, in the semis.
