Women's basketball team gets commitments for 2021-22

Irvine Valley women's basketball coach Julie Hanks is excited to announce the commitment of four players to the Lasers' roster for the 2021-22 season.

They are 6-0 post player Giselle Martinez from Anaheim High, guard Emily Freeman from San Juan Hills High, 5-3 guard Kaila Truby from Aliso Niguel High and 5-9 guard/forward Andrea Garcia from Lake Mary High in Florida.

Martinez has been a standout at Anaheim for the past three seasons, setting school records and helping Anaheim to Orange League titles the past three seasons. She had a school-record eight blocks in a game in 2020 and recorded a school-record 13 steals in a game this season.

                                                                                                                             

Martinez was part of the Anaheim State regional finalist team in 2019.

She has helped lead her team to a record of 17-4 overall and 9-0 in league so far this year.

The squad went 24-5 overall and 10-0 in league in the 2019-20 campaign in her junior year and was 27-6 overall and 12-0 in league during her sophomore season.

She has never lost a league game in her varsity career.

Martinez was named second team all-league in 2019 and first team league in 2020.

She is averaging 17 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists so far this year.

Freeman averaged 11.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals for San Juan Hills before going down with an injury.

Last year, she averaged 13.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game for a San Juan Hills team that went 22-6 overall and 8-0 to win a South Coast League title.

And she made a school-record 83 three-pointers last season. Freeman was a fourth-team All-County selection last season and co-MVP of the Sea View League during the 2019-20 campaign.

Truby averaged 4.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and

Truby played during the 2019-20 season for the Wolverines and averaged 4.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.9 steals per game for a team that went 20-9 overall.

Garcia, from Florida, averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game this past season.

Irvine Valley did not have a season for 2020-21 due to health and safety protocols around the Covid-19 pandemic.

But the Lasers won three straight Orange Empire Conference titles before that with a record of 25-3 overall and 12-0 in conference in 2019-20, 23-6 overall and 12-2 in conference in 2018-19 and 26-5 overall and 13-1 in conference in 2017-18.

Irvine Valley reached the CCCAA State Tournament during that 2017-18 season.
