Women's badminton players qualify for state individual tourney

The Irvine Valley women's badminton team competed in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association Championships on Friday afternoon at San Diego Mesa College.

Irvine Valley had five players finish in the top eight in singles and three doubles teams place in the final six in doubles to move on to the CCCAA State Championships individual tournament May 11-12 at San Diego City College.

The IVC doubles team of freshman Michelle Chen and freshman Chien Tu was the runner-up in the event, falling to Grossmont's Yukari Naono and Michiho Kobayashi in the final.

IVC's duo of freshman Emily Yang and sophomore Jessie Mei placed fourth and the team of sophomore Anne Olsen and Sally Li came in fifth.

In singles action, IVC took the fourth through the eight spots.

Chen placed fourth, Tu was fifth, Olsen came in sixth, Yang finished seventh and Mei was eighth.

Naono won the singles title, beating her teammate Kobayashi.

Irvine Valley, which captured the team title in the PCAC with an 8-1 record, next plays on Wednesday at Pasadena City with a trip to the team state final on the line.

Pasadena City, which has a record of 11-0, won its fourth straight undefeated South Coast Conference championship last week with two easy wins over El Camino.

PCC extended its overall winning streak to 24 matches going back to the start of the 2017 season, stretched its conference win string to 39 over the past four seasons, and a regular-season win streak now at 46 matches.

The defending CCCAA state champion, Pasadena City will host Irvine Valley in the Southern California Championship match at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The winner will advance to the CCCAA State Championship final against Northern California winner Fresno City on May 10 at San Diego City.
