The Irvine Valley women's badminton team had a strong showing at the 2014 CCCAA Women's Badminton State Championships at De Anza College last weekend.
The Lasers had a player finish as the runner-up in singles and had a doubles team win the consolation title.
IVC freshman Jurate Foes, who was the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference singles champion, fell to defending state champion Pinky Li of De Anza, 21-13, 21-6.
Foes started off the singles championship match by taking the first two points. But Li ran off three consecutive points to pull ahead.
The match remained tight with Foes staying within 11-9. But then Li won six straight points to take control, 17-9, before winning the first set, 21-13.
Li jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Foes won the next two points to get within, 4-2, before Li took control. She won the next 10 points to go ahead, 14-2, and then later closed out the match.
Foes received a bye in the opening round of the singles event and won her next three matches to reach the final.
IVC's Deepthi Rao and Peihong Jiang each won a singles match in the event before being knocked out in the second round.
Irvine Valley's Karen Wang, who lost her first match in the main draw, ended up reaching the finals of the consolation bracket. She won three straight matches before losing in the consolation final to MJ Pham of Skyline.
In the doubles competition, IVC's team of Rao and Wang won the doubles consolation title. The duo lost its first match in the main draw, but then won three straight for the consolation title. The IVC duo defeated Skyline's Pham and Clarisse Domingo for the title.
The Irvine Valley teams of Jessey Wang and Eva Chen and Foes and Jiang each won a match before being knocked out of the main doubles draw.
Irvine Valley will host next year's State Championships.
