Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team suffered its first setback of the season, losing to the College of the Canyons in four sets on Wednesday night on the road.

Canyons came out on top, 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21.

It was Irvine Valley's first loss of the season. The Lasers started the year last week with a sweep of Antelope Valley.

The Lasers hit just .221 as a team in the contest and had 12 serving errors.

Freshman outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa led the way with 18 kills and 19 digs. She also hit .372 on the night.

Sophomore outside hitter Lucee Fitzgerald and sophomore opposite Juju Cannon each chipped in eight kills. Fitzgerald also had 12 digs.

Sophomore setter Alissa Blevins ended with 42 assists and seven digs.

Canyons, which hit .315 for the match, was paced by Emily Burns with 17 kills and Ashley Sargent and Sam Nua with 13 kills each. Rachel Perez had 46 assists.

Irvine Valley won a tight first set and had leads in both the second and third sets, but couldn't hold on.

The Lasers got down big in the fourth set, but rallied to get back in it before falling.

"We had trouble with our first contact and then that affected our second contact," Irvine Valley coach Nate Ngo said. "It just shows that we still have a lot to work on."

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday in a nonconference match next Tuesday at Palomar at 5 p.m. The Lasers are then home again to start Orange Empire Conference play on Friday, Sept. 16 against Orange Coast at 6 p.m.
