Irvine Valley's men's basketball team scored its best win of the season by far on Thursday afternoon.
The Lasers knocked off one of the hottest squads in the state, beating San Diego City, 72-70, in overtime in a first-round game of the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback.
San Diego City had won seven straight games and was ranked No. 8 in the latest state poll.
The Knights captured the Grossmont Tournament title last week.
Irvine Valley, which was coming off losing two straight games in the Don Johnson Tournament at Cypress last week, improved its record to 7-5 overall.
The Lasers got 15 points each from sophomore point guard Zuri Williams and freshman forward Lance Coleman II in Thursday's win.
Williams added four steals and Coleman had three assists.
Sophomore guard Mike Turner chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks and sophomore forward Zach Harvey contributed nine points and six rebounds for IVC.
Freshman guard Bekim Djokovic and sophomore guard Jack Taylor each finished with six points. Taylor also had five rebounds.
IVC came out on top despite committing 28 turnovers in the game.
The Lasers won by shooting 50.0 percent (23 of 46) from the field as a team. The Lasers also made 8 of 15 three-point attempts.
Irvine Valley also out-rebounded San Diego City, 34-21.
The Lasers led by as many as 12 points in the first half. They were up, 32-22, at halftime.
And Irvine Valley had a 61-55 lead with 1:12 left after two free throws by Turner.
But San Diego City out-scored Irvine Valley, 7-1, the rest of regulation.
IVC turned the ball over on its final two possession of regulation.
San Diego City scored the first two points of overtime, getting two free throws by Darien McClain to go up, 64-62.
A layup by Williams with 3:24 to go in OT put Irvine Valley up, 67-66.
And it was 69-66 Irvine Valley after two free throws by freshman forward Zane Paddon.
San Diego City's Marcus Brumsey tied the score at 70-70 with a layup with 37 seconds left.
The Lasers won it on a basket by a Harvey off an assist by Turner with 10 seconds to play.
McClain had a shot with 2 seconds to go, but missed and Turner grabbed the rebound to end it.
Irvine Valley will play in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. against Mt. San Jacinto, which is ranked No. 13 in the state.
