Men's Basketball team rolls to win over Canyons in classic

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team didn't win its fourth Irvine Valley Classic in a row.

But the Lasers ended the tournament on a solid note.

Irvine Valley raced out to a big lead early and defeated College of the Canyons, 73-59, in the third place game of the tournament on Saturday.

It was a nice win for IVC after losing to Santa Monica by eight points a night earlier in the semifinals.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 4-1 overall. Canyons' record slipped to 3-5 overall.

Freshman forward Lance Coleman II was named to the all-tournament team for the Lasers. He led the way throughout event for IVC, including on Saturday when he finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 29 minutes.

Coleman averaged 24.7 points a game in Irvine Valley's three contests in the tourney.

And he has scored at least 20 points in four of IVC's five games this season.

Sophomore guard Anthony Hernandez was also named to the all-tournament team after finishing with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists in Irvine Valley's win over Canyons.

The Lasers led scored the first nine points of the game on Saturday.

Hernandez made it 9-0 after nailing a three-pointer just two minutes into the contest.

The Lasers were up double digits at 14-4 after another three-pointer by Hernandez with 14:01 to play in the half.

And IVC took a 37-16 lead into halftime. Irvine Valley shot 43.8 percent in the first half, while Canyons fired at only 16.7 percent.

The Lasers made 7 of 12 three-pointers in the opening half.

Irvine Valley went on a 5-1 run to open the second half and took its largest lead of the game at 43-17 with 18:39 to play on a layup by sophomore forward Zach Harvey.

IVC cruised from there.

Irvine Valley ended up shooting 44.1 percent (26 of 59) for the game, while Canyons shot 32.7 percent (17 of 52).

Sophomore forward Riley Kemmer added nine points and sophomore guard Zuri Williams, sophomore guard Mike Turner and freshman guard Bekim Djokovic each chipped in five points for the Lasers.

Canyons was paced by Chris Collins, who had 14 points and seven rebounds, Garrett Harding, who finished with 13 points and six rebounds and Michael Kalu, who contributed 13 points and six rebounds.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, hosting El Camino in a nonconference game at 5 p.m.

In another tournament action on Saturday, Cerritos won the title, beating Santa Monica, 77-67. Jonathan Guzman paced the Falcons with 21 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Brian Nebo, who was named all-tournament had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals and Cristian Perez, who was also named tournament MVP, added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Brandon Russell had 13 points for Santa Monica. Jhamad Norwood, who was picked all-tournament had 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Dwight Murray, who was selected all-tournament, finished with 10 points for the Corsairs.
