Beach volleyball team splits matches in Huntington Beach

Irvine Valley's women's sand volleyball team split a pair of matches on Monday at the Newland Street courts at Huntington Beach.

The Lasers, who are the defending state champs, defeated MiraCosta, 4-1, before losing to the University of New Mexico, 4-1.

New Mexico featured former Irvine Valley state champion indoor and sand volleyball player Marisa Doran.

Against MiraCosta, Irvine Valley got wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions.

Freshman Carlee Roethlisberger and sophomore Hailee Earnest won, 21-13, 21-17, over MiraCosta's Brianna Sizemore and Cady Francis at the top spot.

IVC's No. 3 team of sophomore Emily Reinking and freshman Olivia Aguilar cruised, 21-5, 21-13, the fourth team of freshman Alissa Blevins and sophomore Juju Cannon came out on top, 21-19, 16-21, 15-10, and the No. 5 Laser squad of sophomore Taylor Askins and freshman Brittany Tuliau won, 21-18, 21-8.

Against New Mexico, Irvine Valley picked up a 22-20, 19-21, 15-12 win from the team of Askins and Tuliau on court five. The duo defeated New Mexico's Carson Heilborn and Maddie Mayfield.

IVC's Earnest and Roethlisberger played tough on the first court, but lost in three sets.

Laser players and coaches were happy to see Doran, the former IVC standout.

She was a star on and off the court at Irvine Valley, being named the school's female scholar athlete of the year last year and winning the Orange Empire Conference Character Champion award in 2014.

Doran also helped Irvine Valley win both sand and indoor state team titles during the 2014-15 school year and captured an individual state sand title in the No. 1 pairs competition with teammate Kobi Pekich (Long Beach State).

She's continued to shine at New Mexico.

Doran and partner Eastyn Baleto won both their matches in the No. 4 spot. The duo now has a record of 9-0 on the season.

New Mexico also beat MiraCosta, 4-1, on the day.

Irvine Valley will play again on Friday, hosting Santa Ana and Cypress starting at 10 a.m.
