Women's sand volleyball team splits with four-year schools

Irvine Valley's women's sand volleyball team split matches with four-year schools on Tuesday at home.

The Lasers lost to the University of Arizona, 5-0, and defeated Concordia University, 5-0.

Arizona featured former Irvine Valley indoor and sand standout Allie Cook.

Concordia was coached by Kari Pestolesi, the daughter of Irvine Valley head coach Tom Pestolesi.

Even with the loss to Arizona, the Lasers were competitive in their opening matches against the Wildcats.

Irvine Valley's No. 1 team of sophomores Marisa Doran and Kob Pekich went three sets before falling, 21-9, 20-22, 15-6.

Sophomore Samantha Holdredge and freshman Kayla Scheevel also played well before losing, 21-14, 21-18, at the No. 4 position.

In the match with Concordia, Irvine Valley won each match in straight sets.

Doran and Pekich won, 21-18, 21-18, at the No. 1 spot.

Irvine Valley's No. 2 team of sophomore Annie Mitchem and Emily Reinking won, 21-9, 21-16.

The freshmen tandem of Hailee Earnest and Hannah Matt came out on top, 21-18, 21-17, at No. 3.

Holdredge and Scheevel won, 21-16, 21-15, at the No. 4 position.

And the team of sophomores Hailey Jones and Shaelyn Perez won, 21-12, 21-13, at the No. 5 position.

The split on Tuesday moved Irvine Valley's record to 3-3 overall on the season.

The Lasers play again on Saturday in an event at Cal State Bakersfield.
