Men's volleyball team falls at OCC, will be No. 2 seed in tourney

For the second time this week, the Irvine Valley men's volleyball team fell to Orange Coast in four sets in a showdown between the top two teams in the Orange Empire Conference.

Orange Coast came out on top, 25-18, 27-29, 25-20, 25-21, at OCC to clinch the top seed going into next week's OEC Championship Tournament.

Irvine Valley with a record of 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference will host No. 3 Fullerton on Thursday at 6 p.m. in one semifinal.

Undefeated OCC (8-0) will take on the winner of Tuesday's play in match-up between Santiago Canyon (1-7) and Golden West (2-6) in the othere semifinal on Thursday at OCC.

The Lasers hit only .212 in their four-set loss to the Pirates at home on Wednesday and they finished at just .183 on Friday.

Freshman outside hitter Colin Chillingworth had 10 kills and nine digs, freshman outside hitter JT Demure finished with eight kills and nine digs, sophomore opposite Garret Schnitker added eight kills and two blocks and freshman opposite Julio Gutierrez had eight kills, four blocks and hit .613 for the Lasers.

Freshman setter Andrew Perez ended with 37 assists and freshman libero Adam Schulte had eight digs.

The Lasers will try and get back on track on Thursday against Fullerton. The two teams met once earlier this season with IVC sweeping the Hornets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-18, at Fullerton. Chillingworth had 13 kills and Demure finished with 10 kills and 12 digs in that contest.
