Men's volleyball team records easy sweep of San Diego City

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team halted a two-match losing streak and moved into third place by itself in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with an easy sweep of San Diego City on Wednesday night at home.

The Lasers' 25-7, 25-11, 25-6 victory took just 44 minutes.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in conference. And with Palomar being swept at Grossmont Wednesday night, IVC remained a match behind Orange Coast and Grossmont for first place in conference.

Irvine Valley was tied with Palomar for third going into the night. Palomar and Golden West are each a match behind IVC in the standings now.

Irvine Valley plays Palomar in an important match on Friday at 6 p.m. at IVC. The Lasers pulled out a five-set win when the teams met three weeks ago at Palomar.

"We worry about Palomar," IVC coach Ki Yi said. "But really at this point there isn't a match that we don't worry about. They are all big."

IVC had little trouble with San Diego City (0-13, 0-6).

The team hit .389 on the night. Eight players recorded at least three kills.

Freshman outside hitter Cole Murray led the way with nine kills in 11 attempts (.918 hitting percentage). Freshman outside hitter Josh Schmidt and freshman middle blocker Marcus Dillon each recorded five kills and freshman setter John Lasezky and freshman middle blocker Matt Mittry each added four kills.

Freshman setter Steven Duhoux ran the offense with 29 assists.
