Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Feb. 17 is freshman women's basketball player Samantha Barnett.
The star guard had her highest scoring game of the season last Thursday night with 27 points as the Lasers defeated Saddleback, 72-44, at home in Orange Empire Conference action.
Barnett was 11 of 20 from the field in the game and made 5 of 6 free throws.
She also added eight rebounds, two assists, one block and five steals in the win.
On the season, Barnett, out of Downey High, is averaging 12.4 points a game. It is second best on the team.
She is also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest.
Barnett has started all 26 games for the Lasers this season.
IVC has a record of 14-12 overall and is 6-4 in conference play.
Irvine Valley plays its final two games of the regular season this week. The Lasers are at Fullerton at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and then they host Orange Coast on Friday at 5 p.m.
