Irvine Valley sophomore women's volleyball player Shaelyn Perez has signed with UC San Diego for the fall.
Perez was a key member of both the state-winning indoor and sand volleyball teams at IVC this school year.
The women's indoor team had a record of 27-0 and won the first state championship in program history.
She played in 20 matches and averaged 1.37 kills per set.
Perez, a 5-8 outside hitter, had a season-high nine kills and hit .357 in a sweep of Santa Ana last October.
Perez, who is was also a two-year scholar athlete at IVC, was a part of two straight Laser teams that won Orange Empire Conference titles.
She was also a force on the sand for the Lasers.
Irvine Valley won the inaugural CCCAA team State Championship, which was held at IVC earlier this month.
Perez and freshman Taylor Askins defeated Golden West's duo of Megan Sanchez and Kelsey Osgood, 21-14, 21-11, at the No. 5 pairs spot to help seal the overall IVC state victory on May 1.
Perez and Askins won all three of their matches on the day, also beating teams from Grossmont and Cabrillo.
"Shaelyn and Taylor were our team of the day today," Irvine Valley coach Tom Pestolesi said. "They were really steady. They were just phenomenal for us."
Perez is headed to a UC San Diego indoor team that had a record of 14-12 overall. The Tritons went 12-10 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches, tying for sixth place in the 12-team league. They were ranked as high as 11th in the country.
