Irvine Valley's women's soccer team scored two goals in a two-minute span early in the second half to take the lead against Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference match on Tuesday at IVC.

But Fullerton answered with a goal later in the half and the two teams settled for a 2-2 draw.

Irvine Valley saw its record go to 3-5-2 overall and 1-3-2 in conference, while Fullerton's record moved to 3-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference.

Fullerton controlled play for much of the first half, including getting the game's first goal.

The Hornets scored in the seventh minute when Celene Medina took a cross and knocked the ball past Irvine Valley freshman keeper Rebecca Trejo.

Fullerton out-shot Irvine Valley, 7-1, in the opening half.

But it was a different story over the final 45 minutes.

The Lasers were much more aggressive in creating chances. They out-shot Fullerton, 9-3, in the second half.

In the 51st minute, freshman forward Luci Bernal took a through ball from freshman midfielder Payton Purcell, out-raced the defense and then beat Fullerton goalie Mallory Van Voorhis with a shot to tie the score, 1-1. It was Bernal's first goal as a Laser.

Less than two minutes later, Bernal helped set up a goal to give IVC the lead. She found freshman forward Alexandra Benedict, who tapped the ball into the back of the net.

It was Benedict's second goal of the year.

Irvine Valley had several other chances in the second half. Freshman forward Johanna Abarca, sophomore midfielder Marissa Perez, freshman forward Brenda Chopin and freshman midfielder Alison Martinez either hit shots that went wide or over the top of the net.

Fullerton tied the match in the 68th minute when Madison Wells collected a ball in the IVC defensive end a sent a shot that found its way inside the left post and by Laser sophomore goalie Herminia Verduzco.

Verduzco made a save on a shot by Fullerton's Chaning Cordova after a corner kick late in the contest to preserve the tie.

Irvine Valley will play again on Friday, traveling to Norco for a 3 p.m. start.
