Women's basketball team gets commitments from top players

Irvine Valley's women's basketball coach Julie Hanks has several top players that have committed to play at Irvine Valley in the fall.

They include, 5-8 guard Anai Washington, 5-9 guard Shyla Jones, 5-9 forward Lauryn Manns, 6-2 forward Zoe Stachowski, 5-6 guard Karlee Little, guard Megan Herrera, 5-3 guard Kelli Hanashiro, and forwards Renny Cribbin and Maggie Brown.

Washington finished an impressive career at Norco High last season by averaging 12.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 3.1 steals per game.

Jones was a former teammate of Washington at Norco. She sat out at Cal State San Marcos last season. During the 2016-17 season, Jones averaged 7.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.2 blocks per game for Norco. The dynamic Jones helped lead Norco to a 2015-16 CIF Division 2A championship and a 25-10 overall record as a sophomore.

Manns had a standout season at Centennial High in Corona last year and helped lead her team to a 24-4 record and two playoff victories. She averaged 11.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.4 steals per game.

Stachowski was a star at Redwood High in Larkspur. She helped her team to a 26-5 record after averaging 13.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Redwood won its first league title since 1987 and Stachowski was named her school's female athlete of the year.

Little was part of a Foothill squad that had a record of 21-9 last season.

Hanks is also high on Herrera, Hanashiro, Cribbin and Brown, who should also contribute for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley is coming off one of the best seasons in school history. The Lasers had a record of 26-5 overall in 2017-18, won a share of the Orange Empire Conference title and made the program's second-ever appearance in the CCCAA State Championship tournament.

The team ended up ranked No. 8 in the final CCCSIA Top 20 State Poll of the year.
