Men's tennis team awarded top seed in playoffs

In a season of firsts, the Irvine Valley men's tennis team has added a couple more.

The Lasers were awarded the top seed in the Southern California Team Playoffs for the first time in program history.

Irvine Valley opens the playoffs at home on Tuesday against No. 8 Grossmont at 2 p.m.

It will not only be Irvine Valley's first home playoff match, but its first postseason appearance.

Other first round matches  on Tuesday feature No. 2 College of the Desert hosting No. 7 Riverside, No. 3 Cerritos hosting No. 5 San Diego Mesa and No. 4 Mt. San Jacinto hosting No. 6 Glendale.

If Irvine Valley gets past its first round match it would host the winner of the Mt. San Jacinto and Glendale contest on Tuesday, April 15.

But first Irvine Valley has to get past Grossmont.

The Griffins have a record of 17-8 overall. They were fourth in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with a 9-5 mark.

Grossmont was the fourth team out of the conference to make the playoffs. The top three teams from the conference were College of the Desert, Mt. San Jacinto and San Diego Mesa.

Irvine Valley has a record of 14-2 overall and went 10-0 to win the Orange Empire Conference.

The Lasers, led by freshmen Guillermo Ucelay and Simon Guillin and sophomores Steven Le and James Lafond, won the conference for the first time in program history this season.

The team's lone two losses of the year were both to NAIA ranked four-year schools.

Nine of the team's 14 wins were shutouts.

IVC finished the regular season with an 8-1 victory at Orange Coast last Tuesday.
