Men's soccer team starts season with draw at Glendale

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team began its season with a 1-1 draw at Glendale last Friday night.

"We played well and could have had more goals," IVC coach Martin McGrogan said. "We had a lot of chances, especially in the first half."

Irvine Valley fell behind, 1-0, in the 35th minute, but tied the game midway through the second half on a penalty kick.

Freshman Albert Chavez was taken down in the box. Freshman Toby Waterman stepped up and converted the penalty.

Sophomore Manuel Zamora made three saves in goal for IVC, including a couple of good ones late to keep the game tied.

"I thought Toby and Kendrick Nguyen and Joe Ferguson did well throughout the game for us," McGrogan said. "We have some work to do and need to finish our chances, but I like what I've seen so far."

Irvine Valley will play again in the Hartnell Tournament this weekend. The Lasers start the event with a 1 p.m. match on Friday against American River.
