Basketball team hosts top-ranked team in the state tonight

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team plays host to the top team in the state Wednesday night at home at 6 p.m.

Fullerton travels to Irvine, sporting a 24-1 overall record and 13-0 mark in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Hornets clinched the conference title last Friday by defeating Oreange Coast, 120-76.

Undefeated in the OEC with three games left in the regular season, the Hornets locked down their 31st conference title since the program began in 1927.

It is the fourth OEC Championship won under Head Coach Perry Webster in his seventh season.

Under Webster, FC won it in 2016, 2019, 2021, and now 2022.

Making 68.1 percent from the floor and 64 percent from beyond the arc, it was the second consecutive game in which the Hornets hit the 100-point mark and sixth of the season in the win over OCC.

Seven FC players scored in double digits. Javon Jones led the way with 23 points.

Kobe Newton put up 19 points, Shaquil Bender had 13 points and Sean Newman Jr. and RJ Banks each scored 12 points.

Newman also had 10 assists. Mike Ofoegbu added 11 points, and eight assists and Jeremiah Davis ended with 10 points and five rebounds.

On the season, Bender and Newton each average 13.8 points, Newman Jr. averages 12.9 points, Davis is averaging 11.6 points and Jones averages 9.4 points per game.

Irvine Valley fell at Santa Ana, 67-52, last Friday. The Lasers (4-20, 0-12) were led by freshman forward Makai Caruth, who had his best game of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Freshman guard Luke Farrington added 12 points and sophomore post player Charlie Henderson finished with six points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.

On the year, Henderson averages 13.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest. Farrington is averaging 8.3 points and freshman guard Marcus Carter is averaging 6.1 points.

After Wednesday's game, Irvine Valley will be on the road Friday at Santiago Canyon at 6 p.m.
