Men's basketball team defeats Santa Ana in last game of season

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team wrapped up the 2018-19 season on a positive note.

The Lasers won their last game of the year, beating Santa Ana, 72-68, in an Orange Empire Conference game at home.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 6-22 overall and 3-9 in conference. Santa Ana's record fell to 8-20 overall and 2-10 in conference.

Irvine Valley moved ahead of Santa Ana in the conference standings and ended up finishing seventh out of nine teams.

The Lasers were down by as many as 10 points in the opening half and trailed, 38-35, at the half.

But they used a strong second half to pull out the win.

IVC shot 42.9 percent (12 of 28) from the field and knocked down 11 of 14 free throws, while helping limit Santa Ana to just 23.3 percent (7 of 30) shooting in the second half.

Tied, 42-42, early in the second half, Irvine Valley went on a 8-1 run to take the lead for good.

A layup by sophomore guard Kevin Olsen gave Irvine Valley a 50-43 lead with 15:47 to play.

And a three-pointer by Olsen with 10:47 left gave IVC its largest lead of the game at 59-49.

Santa Ana got within 66-64 on a basket by Chris Bailey with 3:38 to go.

And Santa Ana was down just 68-67 after two free throws by Sean Githens with 1:53 remaining.

But Irvine Valley a free throw each from sophomore guard Geoff Salas and sophomore guard DeVon Lamar and two free throws from Mahmud down the stretch to help seal the win.

Mahmud had 16 points, freshman forward Sadiq Muhammad added 14 points and freshman guard Christian Louis chipped in 13 points and five rebounds for IVC.

Santa Ana got 19 points from Ramon Lopez and 16 points and 12 rebounds from Bailey in the defeat.
