Baseball team runs into trouble early in 13-5 loss at San Diego Mesa

Irvine Valley's baseball team ran into early trouble at San Diego Mesa on Tuesday afternoon and fell, 13-5, in the nonconference game.

The loss snapped a two-game IVC win streak and dropped its record to 6-4 overall. Mesa improved to 4-4.

The Olympians scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and three more in the bottom of the second to take full control.

It was a 13-0 Mesa lead at the end of six innings.

IVC could muster just two hits against San Diego Mesa starting pitcher Nick Marinac in his seven innings of work. Marinac earned the win and moved to 2-0.

Freshman righty Chad Burchit suffered the loss. He gave up four runs in the first inning, but none of them were earned. IVC made a key error in the frame.

Five Irvine Valley relievers combined to pitch the next eight innings.

The Lasers scored four runs in the top of the eighth and a single run in the top of the ninth inning.

Freshman center fielder Ben McConnell ended up going 1 for 5 with a run scored and two RBI. Freshman third baseman David Rojas went 1 for 3 with one RBI and sophomore second baseman Colin Conroy also drove in a run for IVC.

Irvine Valley hosts San Diego Mesa on Thursday at 2 p.m.
