Alumni Report: Libero Gabi Lau stars, graduates from WNMU

Former Irvine Valley women's volleyball standout libero Gabi Lau recently graduated from NCAA Division II Western New Mexico University.

She also starred for the Mustangs for two years on the volleyball court. Lau led the team in digs both of the last two seasons.

Lau played at Irvine Valley in the fall 2017 season and helped lead the Lasers to their second California Community College Athletic Association state championship in school history.

The Lasers had a record of 27-0 overall.

Lau was named first team all-Orange Empire Conference that year for the Lasers. She led IVC and was 13th in the conference in digs per set at 2.96 during the regular season and picked that number up even more in the postseason for Irvine Valley.

After IVC's run through the state tournament, Lau ended the year with a digs per set average of 3.55.

In the state tournament, Lau had 24 digs in IVC's sweep of Folsom Lake, 27 digs in the Lasers' five-set win over Canyons and then 30 digs in the squad's four-set, championship win over San Joaquin Delta. It was the most by any player in the state tourney since 2009.

Lau topped double-digit dig matches in 17 of Irvine Valley's 27 matches.

She was also third on the team on the year in aces with 31.

Lau played at Linfield College before transferring to IVC. She also played a season of beach volleyball with IVC in the spring of 2018. Lau was a key member in the No. 4 pair team for IVC as it won an Orange Empire Conference title and reached the CCCCAA State Championship.

Lau (from University Laboratory School in Kailua, HI), earned all-Conference recognition for the second year in a row at Western New Mexico this past season.

She capped off her career landing on the Lone Star Conference honorable mention list.

Lau led the team last fall with 359 digs, averaging 4.54 a set.

She posted a season high 26 digs against West Texas A&M, finishing the season surpassing 20-plus digs seven times.

In only two seasons with the Mustangs, Lau accumulated 897 digs.
