Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Apr. 1 is freshman men's tennis player Patrick Riggs.

The former Woodbridge High standout helped IVC claim the Orange Empire Conference title with a doubles win at the No. 3 spot and then winning in three, grinding sets at No. 4 singles in the Lasers' 7-2 win over Riverside at home last Tuesday afternoon.

Riggs teamed with sophomomore Alyan Ashraf in doubles for an 8-4 win in doubles to give Irvine Valley a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

Riggs then battled in the last singles match of the day, defeating Riverside's Matias Almeda-Ponce, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, to finalize the Irvine Valley win.

Irvine Valley finished up this week with a 9-0 win over Orange Coast on Tuesday at home to end the conference year at 8-0 overall.

The Lasers, with a record of 10-1 overall and ranked No. 1 in Southern California, starts OEC Individual Tournament action on Thursday, Apr. 4 at Riverside City.

The tournament finishes up on Friday.
