Merlin Serpas, Women's Soccer

Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Oct. 2 is standout women's soccer player Merlin Serpas.

The sophomore midfielder was all over the field last week and helped Irvine Valley to back-to-back Orange Empire shutout victories.

Serpas, who is also a team captain for the Lasers, got the Lasers on the board in their 2-0 win at Golden West on Tuesday. She took a pass from Danielle Jauregui in the 25th minute.

She then helped set up a goal with an asssist in the Lasers' 3-0 victory over Fullerton at home on Friday.

The wins moved Irvine Valley's record to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in OEC play. Five of IVC's losses have been by two goals or less.

On the year, Serpas, out of Estancia High, has one goal and two assists. She has started all nine games for IVC.

Irvine Valley has another big conference match on Tuesday, hosting Orange Coast at 3 p.m.
